How to: Do a Hot Oil Treatment

Hi Lovelies!

Tonight I’m posting my first “How-to”. This series of posts are meant to become sort of like a tutorial tag where I’ll share some styling tips and tricks, hair treatments and othr general tutorials.

Seeing as it is the first post of this kind I thought it appropriate to do a tutorial on something I do every single week and that my hair wouldn’t survive without. Today we’re covering how to do a hot oil treatment.

What you’ll need:

Any kind of oil – I personally prefer to use 100% pure, organic coconut oil. Some people love to use olive oil, argan oil or jojoba oil, it all depends 0n your own preference and what works best for your hair. Experiment and find your own favourite!

A microwave or stove – Basically anything you can use to heat the oil up.

And yes, that is truly all you’ll need!

Method:

Do not wash your hair before doing this treatment, it will result in your hair getting really oily and you having to wash it all over again.

Now, with that “disclaimer” out of the way, let’s start!

You want to start with unwashed hair. Make sure to get as much styling products out of your hair as possible byt either brushing through it thoroughly or even adding a slight bit of water just to help dissolve any left over products.

After that you want to either pour or scoop out your oil (depending on whether it is in solid or liquid form) and put it in a small bowl. Adjust the amount depending on the length of your hair. I use approximately 0,5 dl (1/4 cup) for my hair which reaches a couple of inches below shoulder.

The next step is to heat the oil up. We do this to make sure our hair shaft opens up and truly absorb the oil. I usually heat it in the microwave for 30 seconds.

Next, make sure to cover all of your hair, from root to tip. If your ends are especially dry, gently rub the oil in a bit to really make sure they soak up the oil.

I leave the oilΒ  in for 3 to 6 hours depending on how much time I have.

After letting your hair soak up all that wonderful moisture, shampoo and condition your hair as usual. If you’re prone to getting oily scalp make extra sure to shampoo twice to get all the excess oil out of the roots of your hair.

Enjoy that soft, nourished hair!
